From 1954 to 1975, the Ben Hai River served as the demarcation line between the Republic of Vietnam and Democratic Republic of Vietnam. To either side of the river was an area 5Km wide known as the demilitarized zone ( DMZ ). The DMZ itself and areas to the South saw plenty of action and experienced a high military presence during the American War. The area just south of the DMZ was the scene of some of the bloodiest battles of the conflict. However, the area it is still home to some of the most interesting sighs Vietnam has to offer. As you head south from the DMZ, you reach the historic town of Hue, one of the most relaxed places you will find.
